Food Allergy Awareness

Douglas County School District Special Diet Program
Douglas County Nutrition Services understands the importance of providing healthy meals to all students. Lunch time is an important time for students to not only nourish their bodies so they are able to excel in school for the rest of day, but also a time for them to socialize with their peers. Having a food allergy or a food intolerance shouldn't prohibit a student from enjoying meals just like their friends. That is why we created the Special Diet Program for all DCSD students. We can create menus that are free of the student's allergies so they can safely eat school meals. Currently, I have created over 30 different menus and feed over 230 students with food allergies. These allergies run anywhere from Gluten Intolerance to Eosinophilic Esophagitis and everything in between. In order for a student to be in the program, they have to have a medical need for the modified meal and this has to be documented from a physician. I work closely with nurses and the kitchen manager to ensure the meals are being safely made for each student. Please reach out to Tara Gonzales, MDA, RDN, SNS for more information and to get your student signed up. There is no cost to these meals since all school meals are still free through the 21-22 school year!
